20 May - 24 May 2026
Bearded Theory is a vibrant, multi-day family- and community-friendly festival held in the spring in the picturesque Catton Park at Walton-upon-Trent in Derbyshire (postcode DE12 8LN). Taking place from 20th to 24th May 2026, this independent gathering returns with an exciting mix of live music, arts, creative performances and countless opportunities for fun and relaxation. The festival site sits on a beautiful private estate in the heart of the National Forest, and it boasts a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere. Expect attendees of all ages, many in colorful fancy dress or sporting decorative beards and moustaches, as they embrace the event's playful spirit. Whether you are coming with family or friends, you will find a warm community eager to celebrate together.
Across five glorious days, Bearded Theory offers a diverse line-up of music spread across multiple stages. Enjoy everything from folk and acoustic sets to upbeat indie rock, reggae, ska, world music, funk, and electronic dance tunes. Exciting local bands share the bill with rising stars and headliners on the main stage and in smaller tents. Late-night DJs keep the party going under the stars, and even a silent disco might pop up. No two days are the same: one moment you could be swaying to a soulful singer-songwriter in daylight and the next you are dancing to pumping bass beats after dark. With so much variety, there really is something for every musical taste.
Creativity and performance art are around every corner. Keep an eye out for circus performers and fire-dancers roaming the festival, comedy acts to tickle your funny bone, poetry readings by the campfire, and hands-on art installations. Craft workshops abound - you might decorate a hat, learn to make a drum, paint a T-shirt or join an interactive dance circle. A quiet retreat zone invites you to unwind with yoga and meditation or acoustic storytelling sessions if you need a peaceful break from the action.
Children are truly welcomed at Bearded Theory. The festival features an award-winning Children's Village full of games, storytelling, puppet shows and craft activities - all free of charge. For families bringing school-age kids during term time, an on-site school (with approved curriculum classes) lets children keep up with their lessons in a fun environment. Babycare facilities, hangouts for teens, and dedicated family camping areas mean the whole gang can relax. This is not just a festival for kids, but a festival with kids - families enjoy knowing there are plenty of activities to keep the little ones happily busy.
When hunger strikes, a buzzing food village awaits with a global feast of options. Feast on wood-fired pizza, curry bowls, vegan delights, sweet treats and much more from friendly food trucks and stalls. Bars serve local real ales, craft beers and ciders at modest prices, and cozy tea-and-coffee tents offer warm drinks and pastries. The atmosphere is picnic-friendly - many guests bring their own drinks into the festival arenas to enjoy with friends. As night falls, gather around the communal bar or a campfire with your neighbors for a toast or a sing-along. The social vibe at the pub tent or fire pits helps new friends form and memories to blossom.
Evening in the campgrounds is just as magical as the days. Lanterns and fairy lights line the footpaths, and fire pits crackle under the stars as festival-goers share stories and roast marshmallows. Whether you have pitched a tent under the oak trees, booked a campervan spot, or upgraded to a pre-erected glamping tent, waking up to birdsong in the meadows adds to the charm. Clean, well-managed facilities (toilets, showers, tap points) and helpful staff mean you can unwind without worry.
Bearded Theory has earned a reputation as one of the UK's most beloved independent festivals. It is praised for its friendly vibe, diverse entertainment and laid-back ethos. Here there is no pretence - just community spirit, creativity, and a bit of cheeky humour. Come ready to dance, meet kindred spirits around the campfire, and maybe discover a new favorite band. By the end of the weekend you will leave with big smiles, great stories, and the feeling that you have been part of something truly special. Grab your fanciest costume or signature beard decoration and join the celebration!
