Pixies

Pixies are an American alternative rock band from Boston, formed in 1986. The core early lineup consists of Black Francis on vocals and rhythm guitar, Joey Santiago on lead guitar, Kim Deal on bass and vocals, and David Lovering on drums. The band remains active and releases music through Pixies Recording Inc.

Sound and writing

Pixies are associated with the alternative rock movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s, and their music draws on punk rock, surf rock, noise pop and indie rock. Their songs often use loud-quiet-loud dynamics and unusual song structures. Black Francis writes most of the material, and his lyrics frequently use surreal or unusual subjects, including extraterrestrials, incest and biblical imagery.

Early releases and break-up

Their first release is the mini-album Come On Pilgrim in 1987. It is followed by Surfer Rosa in 1988, Doolittle in 1989, Bossanova in 1990 and Trompe le Monde in 1991. The group disbands in 1993. During their first run, they have limited commercial success in the United States but a stronger following in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe.

Influence and reunion

Their style goes on to influence later alternative rock acts including Nirvana, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, the Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. Interest in the band increases after the breakup, and they reunite in 2004 for international touring.

Line-up changes and later albums

Kim Deal leaves in 2012. Kim Shattuck joins for the 2013 tour, then is replaced by Paz Lenchantin, who becomes a full member in 2016. With Lenchantin, Pixies record Head Carrier in 2016, Beneath the Eyrie in 2019 and Doggerel in 2022. In 2024, Emma Richardson, formerly of Band of Skulls, replaces Lenchantin. The band then releases its ninth studio album, The Night the Zombies Came.
