The Sabres of Paradise

The Sabres of Paradise are a British electronic trio from London, active from 1992 to 1995. The group consists of Andrew Weatherall, Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns, and is associated with dub, electronic and glitch as well as experimental techno, ambient and IDM.

Background and releases

The group develops as a joint project between Weatherall and his collaborators Kooner and Burns. It releases a series of singles and EPs, many of which later appear on compilations issued by Warp. The group is also connected to Weatherall’s Sabrettes label, which issues records by artists including Plod and Slab.

Style and notable tracks

The Sabres of Paradise help extend post-techno beyond conventional dancefloor forms. Tracks including “Smokebelch”, “Theme”, “Wilmot” and the longer piece Haunted Dancehall are among the group’s best-known works.

Andrew Weatherall’s wider work

Weatherall is also active as a DJ and remix producer, and his work with decks is influential in its own right. He works with Primal Scream and the Scottish ambient-pop group One Dove, and remixes tracks for James, the Orb, Bjork, Therapy?, Happy Mondays, Future Sound of London, Bomb the Bass, Skylab and Moody Boyz. His mixing is also heard on the three-CD collection Cut the Crap, released by Six by 6 Records.
