Stewart Lee

Stewart Lee is an English comedian, writer and director from Wellington, United Kingdom, born in 1968. He works in stand-up comedy and spoken word, and is also known for his role in the comedy duo Lee and Herring, which he forms with Richard Herring after the two meet at Oxford.

Career

Lee performs solo stand-up as a regular part of his career, including during the period when he is working with Herring. He is especially associated with the 1990s double act Lee and Herring, and with co-writing and directing Jerry Springer, The Opera, a stage show that becomes known for its critical reception and controversy.

Writing, broadcasting and other work

He writes music reviews for several outlets, including The Sunday Times, and presents regularly on Resonance FM 104.4. He also has a noted interest in music and says that the only band he likes that most people know is R.E.M..

Collaborations and related projects

Lee collaborates with Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh. He also curates The Topography of Chance for the Sonic Arts Network, a CD focused on randomness and chance in art, writing and music. The compilation includes tracks by Simon Munnery, Arthur Smith, The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Jem Finer, Kombat Opera and Jon Rose, among others.

Notable work

Jerry Springer, The Opera is a satirical musical based on The Jerry Springer Show. It has a West End run before being broadcast on BBC Two in January 2005 and later touring the UK. The production attracts protests and objections from some Christian groups, who argue that it is blasphemous and offensive.
