The Coral

The Coral are a rock band from Hoylake on the Wirral Peninsula in the United Kingdom. They form in 1996 and remain active. The group includes James Skelly, Lee Southall, Paul Duffy, Nick Power and Ian Skelly; Bill Ryder-Jones also features in the band’s history and is later noted as leaving while the group continues as a five-piece.

Style and influences

The Coral’s music combines 1960s-style psychedelia and folk rock with country elements and modern alternative rock. Their recorded work is associated with folk rock, indie pop, indie rock, jangle pop, neo-psychedelia and psychedelic rock.

Albums and recognition

The band releases nine albums: The Coral, Magic and Medicine, Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker, The Invisible Invasion, Roots & Echoes, The Singles Collection/Magic & Mysteries, Butterfly House, The Curse of Love and Distance Inbetween. Their self-titled debut is nominated for the 2002 Mercury Music Prize and later ranks fourth in NME’s album of the year list.
