Razorlight

Razorlight is a London-based rock band formed in 2002 around singer and songwriter Johnny Borrell. The group is active from 2002 to the present and is associated with alternative rock, indie rock and rock. Its line-up includes Johnny Borrell on vocals and guitar, Björn Ågren on guitar, Carl Dalemo on bass and Andy Burrows on drums, with other members including Shïan Smith-Pancorvo, David Sullivan-Kaplan and Freddie Stitz appearing in the band’s wider history.

Formation and line-up

The band emerges from the London music scene in the summer of 2002 and is described as an Anglo-Swedish act. Borrell becomes the central figure from the start, and the core four-piece line-up pairs him with Ågren, Dalemo and Burrows. The band has played to strong demand in London, including extra shows and a large performance at Alexandra Palace.

Debut album

Razorlight’s debut album, Up All Night, is released in 2004. It reaches number 3 in the UK album chart and receives a mixed but often positive critical response, with favourable notices from publications including NME, Q magazine and Billboard. The record also draws criticism from some quarters for sounding unoriginal, with comparisons made to other bands such as The Strokes.

Reception and public image

The band tends to polarise opinion. Supporters respond to its simple melodies and layered, easy-going songs, while critics accuse it of borrowing from more established rock acts. Johnny Borrell also attracts attention for comments that are taken by some as self-promotional, including a remark comparing himself with Bob Dylan, later explained as a comparison between first albums rather than overall careers.
