Ex-Easter Island Head
Ex-Easter Island Head are a Liverpool-based group built around Nicholas Hunt. They compose and perform music for solid-body electric guitar, percussion and other instruments, using repetition, percussive processes, resonance and amplification, often with multiple electric guitars. Their work draws on ambient, electroacoustic, jazz, minimalism, post-rock, drone music and process music, and is described through a focus on shifting textures, overtones and layered percussion rather than conventional song form.
Style and approach
The group’s music is marked by austere, dense sound worlds, with an emphasis on sustained drones, rhythmic patterns and mechanical-sounding detail. Their performances and recordings use minimal means to create an immersive and organic result, with an ever-changing surface set against a fixed underlying centre.
Recordings and performances
Their debut recording is Mallet Guitars One, released on Nottingham-based Low Point. Ex-Easter Island Head have shared stages with Portico Quartet, Mugstar, Philip Jeck and Rhys Chatham.
