Yak is the ambient techno project of UK producer and DJ John Randall, who is based in Surrey and was previously based in Sheffield. He is a resident DJ for Pretty Pretty Good and is associated with Pretty Pretty Good, Circular Jaw, Tessier-Ashpool, Version, Brotherhood Soundsystem, Black Beacon Sound and Le Chatroom.
Yak also names a London-based psychedelic garage rock trio made up of Oliver Burslem, Andy Jones and Elliot Rawson. In that version of the act, Jones leaves after the first album and Vincent Davies replaces him in 2017. The trio releases a second album, Pursuit of Momentary Happiness, in 2019.
The name is also used by a separate progressive rock band from the UK formed in 1982, whose music is instrumental and whose four albums include Journey of the Yak. That release is the group’s most successful album, and reviewers often compare the band’s sound to Camel and Genesis. Steve Hackett describes Journey of the Yak as beautiful music. The band also raises funds for Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary in Essex through sales of its CDs.
