Vintage Trouble

Vintage Trouble is a US rhythm & blues band from Hollywood, Los Angeles, active from 2010. The group forms around singer Ty Taylor and guitarist Nalle Colt, who begin the project after setting up a simple home studio in Venice Beach and working on material together.

Bassist Rick Barrio Dill, already a friend of both, joins the project and brings his own bass influences and energy. Drummer Richard Danielson is recruited soon afterwards, completing the line-up of Ty Taylor, Nalle Colt, Rick Barrio Dill and Richard Danielson.

Formation and early activity

The band rehearses in Laurel Canyon and starts playing local shows and late-night speakeasies within two weeks of rehearsals in early 2010. Its sound is rooted in original soul and rhythm & blues, with a lean recording approach that favours full takes and a no-frills studio method.

Sound and recordings

Vintage Trouble is associated with blues, blues rock, funk, hard rock, pop and rock and roll, as well as rhythm & blues. The group’s early material includes the singles “Gracefully”, “Nancy Lee”, “Still & Always Will” and “Blues Hand Me Down”. These songs are part of a 12-song recording made only two months into the project during a three-day session.

The band is known for a high-energy live style, with performances described through references to small tweed amps and a commitment to moving audiences. Its recordings and performance approach draw on mid-century soul music, vinyl-era sound and the atmosphere of sweaty juke joints.
