Gabrielle Aplin is an English singer-songwriter from Bath, United Kingdom, working in folk and indie folk. She builds on acoustic and piano-led songwriting and becomes known for covers, original material and a small run of early releases that establish her profile online and in the UK charts.

Early career

Aplin begins posting performance videos on YouTube in 2008 and gains an online following through acoustic versions of songs by artists including Paramore and You Me at Six. She also performs on BBC Wiltshire in July 2010. Her first release is the five-track Acoustic EP, issued in September 2010 on the iTunes Store, and it reaches the top 25 of the UK iTunes album chart. The EP includes “Reverse”, which is used in the television series Made in Chelsea.

Breakthrough and recording career

Since 2010, Aplin releases three EPs and tours in the UK and Europe. In February 2012, she signs to Parlophone and records her debut album. She first reaches a much wider audience in November 2012 when her cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love” is chosen for a John Lewis television advertisement. The song reaches number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in December 2012.

Her second single, “Please Don’t Say You Love Me”, follows in 2013 and becomes her second UK Top 10 single, peaking at number 6. Her debut album, English Rain, is released in May 2013, receives positive reviews and debuts at number 2 on the UK album chart. The album is accompanied by “Panic Cord”, which peaks at number 19 in the UK.

Aplin describes her music as very family orientated and very personal. Among her best-known videos are her original song “Home” and covers of “The Liar and the Lighter” by You Me at Six, “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry and “Forget You” by Cee Lo Green.
