Dodgy

Dodgy are an English alternative rock and britpop group formed in Hounslow, in the United Kingdom. The group is associated with the members Nigel Clark, Mathew Priest, Andy Miller, David Bassey, Chris Hallam, Nick Abnett, Richard Payne and, according to the line-up listed for the band, also includes other members in its wider history. The band is active from 1990 to the present and is linked with Bostin Records.

Line-up and history

Dodgy begin as a trio made up of Nigel Clark on vocals and bass, Mathew Priest on drums and Andy Miller on guitar. Clark, from Birmingham, and Priest, with Miller from London, form the core of the original group. Clark leaves the band in 1998, after which Dodgy split. Priest and Miller later reform the band briefly in 2001 as a five-piece, with David Bassey on vocals, Chris Hallam on keyboards and Nick Abnett on bass. The original trio reunites in 2007.

Recordings

The band’s debut album is produced by Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds and is noted for drawing on classic British pop influences before the wider Britpop wave becomes dominant. Dodgy’s most widely played single in 1995 is “Good Enough”.

In 2001, the reconfigured band records Real Estate, an album partly funded by the group’s fans. After a long gap between albums, Dodgy release Stand Upright In A Cool Place and later What Are We Fighting For.

Touring and reception

After the 2007 reunion, Dodgy announce a tour for November of that year, but Andy Miller breaks his arm and the dates are delayed until March 2008. The resulting shows are described by the band as a homecoming and attract a five-star review from The Guardian.
