DMA’s

DMA’s are an Australian rock band from Sydney, formed in 2013. The group consists of Matthew Mason, Tommy O’Dell and Johnny Took. They are associated with indie rock and rock, and their early sound is described as nostalgic garage pop shaped by the three members’ shared writing and performing roles.

Formation and early work

The three musicians know each other from playing in other bands before starting DMA’s. They begin the project in Newtown, Sydney, and initially work on songs in a bedroom setting. Their early demos are recorded in Johnny Took’s bedroom studio and attract attention before the band gives a first official performance or releases a formal track.

Recordings and label

After signing to the label I OH YOU, DMA’s issue their debut single, “Delete”. The track receives favourable attention and is added to rotation by Triple J. Their debut EP is also released through I OH YOU. The label is also home to acts including Violent Soho, Snakadaktal and DZ Deathrays.

Style and positioning

The band is presented as having three writers and three frontmen, with all three members contributing to the group’s musical identity. Their work is rooted in garage pop, indie rock and rock, with a nostalgic tone in their early material.
