Billy Talent

Billy Talent is a Canadian punk rock band from Mississauga, Ontario. The group forms in 1993 and is active from 1993 to the present. Its core line-up consists of lead vocalist Benjamin Kowalewicz, guitarist Ian D’Sa, bassist Jonathan Gallant and drummer Aaron Solowoniuk.

Early years and name change

The members meet and play together at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School under the name Pezz. They remain part of Toronto’s independent music scene for almost a decade before gaining mainstream success. The band later changes its name to Billy Talent after legal trouble over the original name.

Breakthrough and recording career

A connection made by Kowalewicz with an employee in Warner Music Canada’s A&R department helps the band secure a record deal and reach a wider audience. Billy Talent goes on to sell well over a million physical albums in Canada and nearly 3 million albums internationally. Between 1995 and 2016, the band ranks as the 27th best-selling Canadian artist in Canada and is among the top 10 best-selling Canadian bands in the country.

The group makes three multi-platinum records in Canada and continues to build an international following. Its second album leads to 20 months of touring in support of the release.

Albums

Billy Talent’s studio albums include Billy Talent (2003), Billy Talent II (2006), Billy Talent III (2009), Dead Silence (2012), Afraid of Heights (2016) and Crisis of Faith (2022). The band also releases a greatest hits album, Hits, in 2014.

Later activity

Before recording Afraid of Heights, Aaron Solowoniuk sits out the studio sessions because of multiple sclerosis, and fellow Canadian Jordan Hastings plays drums on the recording. The album is completed in early 2016. The band’s most recent album is Crisis of Faith.

Solowoniuk remains a member of the band, although he takes a hiatus because of a relapse of multiple sclerosis.
