The line-up is one of the strongest in the country. The festival wrapped around it is a £325 ticket, an hour-long queue for its new dance stage, and no BBC Introducing. We score it 3 out of 5.

Is Reading Festival 2026 worth £325?

Not quite, on this evidence. The bands are worth five out of five. The festival is worth three. Charli xcx was very good on Friday. So were Fontaines D.C. So, by all accounts, was Royal Blood's surprise set. But none of that is Reading's achievement — it's a booking department signing cheques. Charli xcx is a world-class live performer in a car park, a shed or an arena, and most people reading this could see her indoors, dry, with a shorter queue for the bar.

The question a £325 weekend ticket has to answer is what the festival adds. Historically Reading's answer was character and discovery: the place you saw a band nobody had heard of at 1pm and spent a decade telling people about it. That is the exact thing 2026 has cut.

Why has the BBC Introducing stage been axed at Reading 2026?

Festival Republic have replaced it with The Canopy, which they say will platform emerging musicians with a bigger stage and stronger production. The published set times show who ended up on it. The weekend features Cruz Beckham, Violet Grohl, Gene Gallagher and Moses Martin — the children of David Beckham, Dave Grohl, Liam Gallagher and Chris Martin respectively. BBC Newsbeat reports that festival-goers have already nicknamed it the nepo baby stage.

That's not the artists' fault; they didn't design the bill. It's a booking decision, and it swaps a route in for people with no team behind them for a route in for people who already have one. Singer-songwriter Beth McCarthy, who played The Grid on Friday after breaking through via BBC Introducing at Glastonbury, told Newsbeat she is furious: "BBC Introducing was always the one way in for artists that weren't already established."

What has actually improved at Reading Festival 2026?

Credit where it's genuinely due. The Gallery is a real upgrade on 2025's Chevron stage — properly divided into sections, which addresses last year's crowding. Reading Indie Life, reporting from the arena, rated Royal Blood's set there as having "by far the cleanest sound of everyone we have heard so far". The new over-21s campsite and the rebranded Oasis quiet zone are sensible additions.

But The Warehouse, the purpose-built dance stage, reportedly hit capacity early on Friday with a wait of around an hour to get in. A stage you can't get into is not an improvement to your weekend.

What are the problems at Reading Festival 2026?

Queues and entry

Security checks at early entry were tighter than 2025, with one person reportedly waiting about an hour to be searched and processed. Thursday traffic around Richfield Avenue was heavy enough that walking from the station beat the shuttle buses at peak times.

Mud and weather

Mud was forming on the routes into the wristband exchanges on Thursday, before a note had been played, and heavy rain hit before Charli xcx's Friday slot. Geese frontman Cameron Winter told a soaked crowd: "Don't drink the tent water, it's not good for you."

Cost and sponsorship

£325 to camp. £195 for a Saturday day ticket. £57.50 a day for a Lounge upgrade to escape the crowd you paid to stand in. Pepsi MAX on the festival's name, Vodafone on the power banks, PayPal on the posh bit. We've written before about where this ends up.

Identity

One 20-year-old attendee told BBC Newsbeat his friends skipped 2026 entirely because of the age of the crowd. Reading's response is a fenced-off field for over-21s. That's a demographic patch, not a personality.

Reading Festival 2026 review: the verdict

Three out of five. Strip out the acts — who would be brilliant on a barge, in a car park or at a rival festival — and what's left is an expensive, heavily sponsored, mostly well-run weekend that has just deleted the one thing it did better than anywhere else.
