The Tribe

The Tribe

The Tribe is a name used by several different acts and projects. The name is attached to a New Zealand post-apocalyptic television series created by Raymond Thompson and Harry Duffin and produced by Cloud 9, set in a near-future world where a virus has killed all adults and children and teenagers live in tribes in an unnamed city. Cast members from that series release the soundtrack album Abe Messiah between the second and third seasons, with songs from the show and new material, and the single “You Belong To Me” is issued in Germany. The album is later re-released as Abe Messiah: Remixed during the fourth and fifth seasons, adding reworked versions of “Abe Messiah” and “You Belong To Me”, the new theme “Tribe Spirit”, and instrumental music from the series.

In another context, The Tribe is a Christian band formed in the early 1990s by Andy Hawthorne, Zac Porter and Mark Pennells, developing out of The Message schools work project in Manchester. That group also uses the name The World Wide Message Tribe, or WWMT, and works across hardcore, dance, pop, gospel and hip-hop with several line-ups over 12 years. It becomes one of the most successful Christian bands in the UK, performing to millions and selling hundreds of thousands of albums.

The name is also used by a Brisbane, Australia band active in the 1980s, and by a Belgian band from the mid-1990s. The Belgian group releases two studio albums, Stone Cold in 1995 and Temper in 1996. Its line-up includes Veerle Everaet on vocals, Francis Depuydt on guitar, violin and backing vocals, Wederik De Meersman on guitar and backing vocals, Bart Biesbrouck on bass, and Kurt Van Dender on drums.
