Mat McHugh is an Australian singer, songwriter and frontman best known as the creative force behind The Beautiful Girls. He also records and performs under the names Mat McHugh and The Black Bird and Mat McHugh & The Seperatista Soundsystem.

Career

McHugh begins with The Beautiful Girls in 2002, when the group’s Morning Sun EP becomes a radio hit in Australia during the summer season. Over the following years, the band completes 12 world tours and releases eight records, with reported album sales of 285,000.

In 2010, the album Spooks becomes a major point in his career. It is described as a dub-oriented record, reaches number 6 on the US Billboard Reggae chart, and enters at number one on the Australian Independent chart. The release receives critical attention internationally and leads to two US tours in the same year: one with the band and another solo acoustic run supporting John Butler.

Solo work

McHugh’s solo direction is rooted in the experience of performing alone on tour. His first solo album presents a stripped-back approach centred on guitar, bass and drums, with no computers or auto-tune. He frames the record as a return to direct, honest songwriting, shaped more by feeling and communication than by studio embellishment.

His influences in this phase include artists such as Johnny Cash and Nick Drake, whose records he sees as simple statements that can feel timeless.
