Kong
Kong is a Dutch instrumental experimental group with roots in Amsterdam. It forms in 1988 as a side project by musicians Dirk DeVries, Aldo Sprenger, Mark Drillich and Rob Smits. The band is active from 1989 to the present and is identified as a Dutch progressive metal band, with music that also draws on progressive rock, noise rock, heavy metal, electronica and avant-garde approaches.
Style and performance
The group’s recordings are largely instrumental and make extensive use of sampling and sound effects. Kong also designs its music for quadraphonic performance, with the members placed in separate corners of the venue to create an immersive live sound field.
Members and related work
The original line-up includes Dirk DeVries on guitar, samples and programming; Aldo Sprenger on guitar; Mark Drillich on bass and programming; and Rob Smits on drums. Former drummer Rob Snijders later plays with Agua de Annique, Celestial Season and Garcia Plays Kyuss.
