King of the North

King of the North is a two-piece stoner rock and rock and roll band from Melbourne, Australia. The group consists of Andrew Higgs on guitar and vocals and Steve Tyssen on drums and backing vocals. It works as a hard rock act with a line-up that uses only guitar and drums, and it performs and records without pre-recorded sounds or samples.

Sound and performance

The band is known for its live intensity and for a large, full sound created by Higgs’s use of a “3 from 1 guitar pedal”. This pedal is designed to make one guitar produce the effect of two guitars and a bass, either as a combined wall of sound or as separate lead, rhythm and bass parts. The result is a dense live sound that can make it seem as though extra players are on stage.

King of the North presents itself as a fully live outfit: all of the sound comes from the two musicians on guitar and drums, with no programmed elements in its live shows or recordings.
