Elevant

Elevant is a Liverpool-based group built around songwriter, singer and guitarist Michael Edward. It begins as a recording project and later develops into a full band. The group draws on hard rock, psychedelia, post-punk, rock and roll, krautrock and blues, along with other influences.

History and line-up

The first self-titled release is recorded at Western Recording Company in Liverpool with Tom Shand on drums and Joe Hutchinson on bass. Kyle Western engineers the sessions. The recording is completed quickly, with tracking, mixing and mastering finished over five days, and several songs are recorded in a single take. Michael Edward remains the central figure in the project, while the line-up becomes fluid, with members coming and going.

Style and approach

The band’s sound reflects a wide range of influences rather than a fixed genre, and its structure is described as collective in nature, with comparisons made to groups such as Funkadelic and The Fall. Originating in Liverpool, Elevant remains active from 2014 onwards.
