Boney M. is a German disco and pop vocal group formed by producer and songwriter Frank Farian. The group is based in West Germany and is active from 1975 to 1986. Its music spans dance-pop, disco, europop, pop and soul, and the group is also associated with funk.

Formation and original line-up

The original official line-up consists of Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett, both from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat, and Bobby Farrell from Aruba. Farian creates the group and serves as its primary songwriter.

Career

Boney M. becomes widely known during the disco era of the late 1970s. From the 1980s onward, different line-ups perform under the Boney M. name with changing personnel. The group is credited with selling more than 100 million records worldwide.

The group is known for international hits including “Daddy Cool”, “Ma Baker”, “Belfast”, “Sunny”, “Rasputin”, “Mary's Boy Child / Oh My Lord” and “Rivers of Babylon”.
