Apogee is the name used by several different acts, including Dan Curtin, a United States-based person entry, and a Japanese synth-pop band formed in 2003.
Japanese band
One Apogee is a Japanese synth-pop group formed in 2003. The line-up consists of Nagano Makoto on vocals and guitar, Mano Wataru on drums and chorus, Ooshiro Yoshihiko on synthesiser and guitar, and YUU Hiroshi on bass and chorus. Its sound draws on new wave and 1980s influences, with prominent synthesiser parts, and it combines those elements with Makoto’s soft, distinctive voice. The group is also known for highly animated music videos.
The band debuts in 2006 with the single “Yakan Hikou” (“Night Flight”). In 2007 it releases its first album, Fantastic, which includes the singles “Ghost Song” and “Good Bye” as well as the debut single. It also records acoustic versions of cover songs by artists including BONNIE PINK, Crystal Kay and Utada Hikaru. In the same year, the group appears at SUMMER SONIC ’07.
Other acts using the name
Other acts called Apogee include a German progressive rock band centred on Arne Schäfer, who plays all the instruments and sings in a Hammillian-oriented progressive style. That project is described as having thoughtful lyrics, strong instrumental textures and well-produced albums.
Additional Apogee projects include a fusion rock band based in Kent, Ohio; a short-lived 1997 group involving Mr. Dibbs, Yoni Wolf of Why? and Dose One; a West Philadelphia power trio; and a Juneau, Alaska band also known as P&W, which starts in 2008 and performs mostly progressive rock originals and covers.
