Tzusing is a Malaysian electronic music producer based in Shanghai and Taipei. Born in Malaysia, he works in techno shaped by EBM, industrial music and a range of Asian and Middle Eastern musical traditions. His sound keeps percussion to the fore and often combines ceremonial drumming, industrial rhythms, acoustic instruments and vocals.

Early DJ work

Tzusing begins DJing in 2002 while living in Chicago, where he moves after graduating from high school in San Diego. There he encounters house music and club culture, and becomes a resident DJ at Smartbar. He later moves to China at the urging of his parents and starts a bike-parts business. After feeling isolated, he relocates to Shanghai and resumes DJing, beginning with a residency at Shelter.

Recordings and releases

Tzusing releases the track “Teeth” on Clan Destine Records’ Dark Acid III EP. He gives a copy to Doug Lee, also known as An-I, who brings it to Ron Morelli’s attention. Morelli signs him to L.I.E.S. (Long Island Electrical Systems), which issues a trilogy of EPs, A Name Out of Place, one each year between 2014 and 2016.

He also releases tracks on Cititrax’s Tracks EPs and collaborates with Samo DJ and Baba Stiltz on EPs released by Public Possession and Born Free Records. L.I.E.S. releases his debut album, Dongfang Bubai, in 2017. The title is taken from the lead character in Jin Yong’s wuxia novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer. Later in the same year, Bedouin Records issues the EP In a Moment a Thousand Hits.

His recorded output is associated with acid techno, deconstructed club, deep house, EBM, hard drum and industrial techno. He releases music on Sea Cucumber, L.I.E.S., Clan Destine Records, Cititrax, Public Possession and Born Free Records.
