Todd Terje

Todd Terje is a Norwegian producer and DJ from Buskerud, born in 1981 and associated with disco, electronica, house and synthwave. He comes from Mjøndalen and becomes known for releases that draw on disco, funk, Latin jazz, house and other dance music styles.

Career

Terje first makes a name for himself with a run of releases that include the track “Eurodans” and a Latin disco-oriented edit of Michael Jackson’s “Can’t Help It” issued under the Tangoterje name. He works under that edit moniker as well as under his own name, and his output is noted for combining strong rhythmic feel with playful arrangements and detailed musicality.

He begins making music in his early teens with his friend Dølle Jølle, using a basic computer to experiment with house and jungle. They play these early recordings from cassette tapes at junior high school dances. Although he initially dismisses disco, hearing Bjørn Torske’s “Sexy Disco” in 1999 changes his view of the style.

Education and influences

Terje trains as a pianist at a local music school, but later moves away from that path and studies physics at the University of Oslo. His musical influences grow through dance music that reaches rural Norway in the 1990s, alongside the impact of artists and broadcasters such as The Prodigy, Olle Abstract and Pål “Strangefruit” Nyhus.

His sister is a close friend of Tore “Erot” Kroknes, and the tapes she brings home become an important influence on his development. He also develops a wide record collection, ranging from releases by Idjut Boys to more obscure experimental synth music.

Oslo scene and collaborations

In 2001, Terje gets in touch with Prins Thomas, who works at HS Records in Oslo. Thomas recognises his potential and helps guide his direction. Terje becomes one of the key figures in the Oslo electronic disco scene.

He works on tracks by Prins Thomas and remixes Lindstrøm’s “Another Station”.

Style

Terje describes his music through elements such as catchy rhythms, dubby sounds, dreamy synthesizer layers and cinematic moods. His work resists easy categorisation, moving between house, funk, techno and disco, with a focus on playfulness as much as precision.

Performance

He plays across Europe and develops a reputation within club culture through both DJ sets and production work.
