The World/Inferno Friendship Society

The World/Inferno Friendship Society is a Brooklyn group active from 1996 to 2021. Its music combines punk with cabaret, dark cabaret, gypsy punk, ska, klezmer and gospel, and it is also described as art punk and punk rock. The band develops a theatrical, collective approach to performance, with a changing line-up that has historically included more than 30 members.

Line-up and instrumentation

The group’s membership has included Semra Erçin, Lucky Strano, Jack Terricloth, Ben Kotch, Maura Corrigan, Peter Hess, Yula Beeri, Franz Nicolay, Aaron Hammes and Dan Bailey. Jack Terricloth and Lucky Strano are the most constant members in the band’s history, with Terricloth serving as lead singer. Performances commonly feature horns, piano, guitar and several percussionists, alongside instruments such as accordion, xylophone and orchestra bells. In live shows, the band usually appears with around nine or ten performers.

Style and themes

The World/Inferno Friendship Society is known for songs that draw on historical and biographical subjects. Their lyrics reference Weimar-era Germany, Peter Lorre, Jeffrey Lee Pierce of The Gun Club, Paul Robeson, Leni Riefenstahl, Dante Alighieri and Jonathan Fire*Eater, among others. Other songs focus on what the band presents as the frightening, ecstatic, magical and unpleasant parts of life. Terricloth’s stage monologues are also part of the group’s identity and often touch on politics and on his own transformation from the “old school”.

Recording and collaborations

One noted work is a three-song cycle about love and loss in a temporary autonomous zone, which appears on the 2002 album Just the Best Party. The band’s catalogue also includes “Our Candidate”, on which The Casualties appear, along with Paul Maroon of Jonathan Fire*Eater on guitar. Members of the group have also played in Sticks and Stones, Guignol, The Hold Steady, Nanuchka, Kid Casanova, Anti-Social Music, Morning Glory, Planned Collapse, Star Fucking Hipsters and The Dresden Dolls, and have appeared as guests on recordings by Mischief Brew, stellastarr*, Public Radio International and Leftöver Crack.

Later history

Jack Terricloth dies in May 2021. The band’s activity continues through the Jack Terricloth Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving his legacy. In 2023, the group releases Valhalla, Definitely, a posthumous album made up of previously unheard material refined by current members of the Society.
