The Sontaran Experiment
The Sontaran Experiment is a group named after a Doctor Who episode from 1975. It forms around extreme metal and noise, combining crushing doom, blastbeats, harsh electronics and vocals, and a progressive feel.
Style and structure
The band works with long compositions, with songs structured at around 15 to 20 minutes and divided into movements. Its sound draws on sludge, experimental music, doom metal and drone, with a focus on volume, heaviness and electronic noise.
Formation and members
The project begins when noise artist Stuntcock looks for extreme musicians to play with his electronic material. He brings in his old cohort Seddon, along with Rooster and Si, described as travelling Sontarans. The line-up listed for the group is Catten on electronics and voice, Seddon on guitars and feedback, Rooster on bass and feedback, and Si on drums. The verified membership information gives Paul Catten as a member.
Recording and release
The band’s debut release is a split EP with Stuntcock, issued through Future Noise Records.
Performance identity
The Sontaran Experiment presents itself as an extreme project with no middle ground in its reaction, built around dense, confrontational music and science-fiction imagery tied to its name.
