The Murder Capital are an Irish post-punk band from Dublin, Ireland. They are a five-piece group made up of James McGovern on vocals, Gabriel Paschal Blake on bass, Damien Tuit on guitar, Cathal Roper on guitar and Diarmuid Brennan on drums. The band begins performing together in 2015 and takes its name into wider circulation through the late 2010s post-punk scene.

Career

The band signs to Human Season Records in 2018 and releases its first singles in 2019. Its debut studio album, When I Have Fears, appears in 2019 and is produced by Flood.

Style and context

The Murder Capital are associated with post-punk and post-punk revival, with links also made to art punk and indie rock. They are frequently grouped with other late-2010s UK and Irish post-punk acts, including Idles, Slaves, Shame and Fontaines D.C., in part because of touring connections. Their music is also described in relation to influences and techniques associated with Joy Division, Pixies, Shame, Savages, PJ Harvey and the Bad Seeds.

Themes

Their lyrics and public comments address conditions in Dublin, including housing development, homelessness, suicide, mental health issues and wider gaps in social support. They present these concerns as a response to what they see around them in the city.
