The Kentucky Headhunters
The Kentucky Headhunters are a country rock and southern rock group from Edmonton, United States. Formed in 1968, the band remains active and is associated with a long-running line-up that includes Anthony Kenney, Greg Martin, Mark S Orr, Rickey Lee Phelps and Fred Young.
The group builds a style that combines southern rock with country music, and its sound also draws on bluegrass, blues and hard rock, at times edging towards traditional metal. An early description of their music compared it to “Bill Monroe meets Cream,” reflecting the way the band blends older country traditions with rock instrumentation and attitude.
The Kentucky Headhunters release seven studio albums and develop a following among both traditional country listeners and rock audiences, including alt-country fans and listeners of southern music. Their work crosses genre boundaries while often returning to straightforward country material.
The band wins three Country Music Association awards, an Academy of Country Music award and a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
