The Early November

The Early November are an emo band from Hammonton, United States, active since 1999. The group forms around guitarist and singer Ace Enders and drummer Jeff Kummer, with Sergio Anello, Bill Lugg, Joseph Marro, Mike Klemash and Steve Nakovich also listed as members. The band’s early line-up changes are a recurring part of its history, with several musicians joining or leaving during its first few years.

Formation and early releases

The band begins in Hammonton in February 2001, when Enders and Jim Sacco form it with bassist Sergio Anello and drummer Jeff Kummer. They record a five-track demo in Enders’ basement and send it to Drive-Thru Records, which leads to contact with label co-owner Richard Reines. After more line-up changes, including the arrival of Steve Nakovich, Mike Klemash and later Joseph Marro, Drive-Thru signs the band.

The Early November appear at Skate and Surf Fest in 2002 and play selected Warped Tour dates before releasing their debut EP, For All of This, on Drive-Thru Records in early November 2002. Enders then records The Acoustic EP alone, using acoustic versions of most of the debut EP material, and the band follows with its first full-length, The Room’s Too Cold, in 2003.

Albums, hiatus and return

After The Room’s Too Cold, Enders records solo material under the name I Can Make a Mess Like Nobody’s Business. The band’s second full-length, The Mother, the Mechanic and the Path, is a triple-disc release that comes out in 2006 after a lengthy recording process. Bill Lugg, the band’s guitar tech, joins during that period.

The Early November announce an indefinite hiatus in March 2007 and play their last show at the Bamboozle Festival in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in May 2007. During the break, Enders releases The World We Know in 2010 under his solo project name. The band later reunites and tours the United States in 2012.

Later releases

After returning, The Early November release In Currents in 2012, their first album after the hiatus. Further albums follow with Imbue in 2015, the compilation Fifteen years in 2017, Lilac in 2019 and Twenty in 2022. A self-titled album is also part of their catalogue.
