The Dead Weather are an alternative rock group from Nashville, United States, active since 2009. Their line-up consists of Alison Mosshart, Dean Fertita, Jack Lawrence and Jack White. The band’s music sits within alternative rock, blues rock, garage rock, garage rock revival and rock, with related associations to garage rock and stoner rock.

Line-up and background

Alison Mosshart handles vocals and guitar, Dean Fertita plays guitar and organ, Jack Lawrence plays bass and drums, and Jack White plays drums, vocals and guitar. The group brings together musicians already known for other alternative rock acts: Mosshart is also in The Kills, Fertita is in Queens of the Stone Age, Lawrence is in The Greenhornes and The Raconteurs, and White is known for The White Stripes and The Raconteurs.

Recording and releases

Jack White produces the band’s album Horehound. It is recorded in three weeks at his Third Man Studio in Nashville, and it marks a notable example of White playing drums rather than his more familiar guitar role. White’s last previous booking as a drummer is with Detroit punk band Goober and the Peas, when he is 19.
