The Barker Band

The Barker Band is an English country band from London. It begins as a duo of twin brothers Jake Barker and Sam Barker, who play bluegrass with their oldest friend Laurie Sherman and their father, Lenny Barker. The group starts writing and recording original songs early on, drawing on bluegrass, rock, country and blues.

Line-up and development

The band makes its live debut in 2004. By 2005 it expands to include vocalist Nella Johnson and bass player Tom Wright, with drummer Ru Shreeve joining in 2006. The verified line-up identifies Jake Barker and Sam Barker as the group’s members.

Live work and festivals

By 2007 the band is playing regularly at London venues including The Borderline and The Boogaloo. It also appears at festivals such as The Camden Crawl and The Innocent Festival in Regent’s Park. The band tours with Jack Peñate and Adele. In 2008 it plays at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, and later appears at Bestival.

Recordings

The Barker Band releases Lonesome Waltz in 2006, The Night Ain’t Over in 2007 and Sorry for the Kissing in 2009.

Reception

The band is associated with London’s country-rock scene and is described as one of its leading acts. It also receives attention from NME, Time Out and Vogue, which tip it as a band to watch.
