The B-52's
The B-52's are an American new wave group from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1976 and active since. The band’s core early line-up consists of Fred Schneider on vocals, Kate Pierson on vocals and organ, Cindy Wilson on vocals and bongos, Ricky Wilson on guitar, and Keith Strickland on drums. After Ricky Wilson dies in 1985, Strickland moves from drums to guitar.
Style and sound
The band is associated with new wave, dance-pop, dance-rock, pop, pop rock, and post-punk. Their music blends older dance styles with surf rock and other experimental elements, and their sound is shaped by the contrast between Wilson and Pierson’s vocals and Schneider’s more monotone, spoken-word delivery. Ricky Wilson’s guitar tunings also form part of their distinctive sound.
Image and name
The band’s name comes from the bouffant wigs worn by Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, which become part of their visual identity. Their early public image combines a playful, party-oriented style with a deliberately unusual aesthetic.
History
The group forms after a drunken night at a Chinese restaurant. From the start, it develops a reputation as part of the new wave scene while also sounding more experimental than many of its contemporaries. The band shares a taste for combining older musical forms with a quirky, good-time approach.
Line-up
Members listed for the group include Ricky Wilson, Paul Gordon, Pat Irwin, Kate Pierson, Fred Schneider, Keith Strickland, and Cindy Wilson. The original line-up centres on Schneider, Pierson, Cindy Wilson, Ricky Wilson, and Strickland.
Recording and label
The B-52's record for Warner Bros. Records Inc.
