Sunchild

Sunchild is a Ukrainian crossover prog project led by Antony Kalugin. It is active from 2007 and is associated with Kalugin as his solo project. Kalugin is the only listed member.

Overview

The project sits within progressive rock and related crossover prog territory, and the music is built around Kalugin’s keyboard work and songwriting. He also handles most of the vocals in English and brings in guest singers, both male and female.

Music and style

Sunchild uses varied tempos, prominent keyboards and a broad arrangement style. Horns and woodwinds feature strongly, and the project includes songs with extended running times, including several over 16 minutes on the debut double album. The recordings also draw on a wide range of textures, from layered violin parts to drum patterns associated with hip-hop and material recorded in both professional studios and home settings.

Antony Kalugin

Antony Kalugin is a prolific Ukrainian musician born in 1981. Under the Sunchild name, he works alongside other Ukrainian musicians, while also recording under the names Karfagen and Hoggwash. His role in Sunchild centres on keyboards, writing and lead vocals.

Releases and activity

The project’s debut self-titled album is a double release. The description of the music also notes a raw but polished approach, with songs assembled from both acoustic guitar-based writing and more heavily arranged production. Sunchild continues as a Kalugin project within the Ukrainian progressive scene.
