Sudan Archives
Sudan Archives is the project of Brittney Denise Parks, a violinist, vocalist, writer, producer and performer based in California. She grows out of the musical background of Cincinnati, Ohio, and her work combines alternative folk, electro, experimental electronic music, R&B, singer-songwriter and soul elements.
Background and style
Parks is self-taught on the violin. She starts playing in fourth grade and learns by ear, after spending time experimenting with instruments at home while growing up in Cincinnati. The violin playing styles of Northeast Africa, especially the Sudanese fiddle, shape her approach to the instrument and lead her to combine it with electronic sounds. She describes the difference between that style and classical violin as a key influence on the way she uses the instrument in her own music.
Recordings
Under the name Sudan Archives, she releases the self-titled Sudan Archives in 2017 and Sink in 2018, both on Stones Throw Records.
