Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble are a blues and blues rock group from Austin, United States, active from 1978 to 1990. The line-up includes Stevie Ray Vaughan, drummer Chris Layton, bassist Tommy Shannon and keyboard player Reese Wynans. The band begins as a trio fronted by Vaughan, with the name Double Trouble used for the group.
History
The group forms in 1979 with Vaughan, drummer Chris Layton and bassist Jackie Newhouse. Tommy Shannon joins on bass in 1981, replacing Newhouse, and Reese Wynans joins on keyboards in 1985. Vaughan dies in a helicopter accident on 27 August 1990, bringing the group’s activity to an end.
Musical style and influences
The band is associated with blues, blues rock, electric Texas blues and Texas blues. Vaughan’s playing draws on a wide range of blues and rock guitarists, including Lonnie Mack, Albert King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. His style and influence make the group one of the most notable names in blues guitar.
