Squeeze

Squeeze are a UK new wave band from London, active since 1974. They work across new wave, pop and rock, and are built around the songwriting partnership of Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford, who remain the group’s only constant members apart from Difford’s hiatus in 1999.

Formation and core line-up

The band forms in London in 1974, with Tilbrook handling vocals and guitar and Difford on guitar and vocals. The original line-up also includes Jools Holland on piano. Holland later becomes a solo artist and bandleader and is best known as the host of Later with Jools Holland.

Other members across the group’s history include John Bentley, who plays bass and is part of the band’s 2007 reformation after previously being a member from 1980 to 1982, as well as Stephen Large on keyboards, Lucy Shaw on bass, and Simon Hanson on drums.

Releases and activity

The band initially splits in 1982, then reunites in 1985 before splitting again in 1999. Their last album is Domino in 1998. In 2007, Difford and Tilbrook reform Squeeze for concerts in the USA and Britain, alongside Bentley, Large and Hanson, and the group remains active.

Associated artists

In the 1980s, Squeeze also features Paul Carrack on lead vocals. Carrack is known for singing with Ace, with Mike and the Mechanics, and as a solo artist.
