Sinéad O'Connor is an Irish singer-songwriter and musician from Glenageary, Ireland. Born in 1966 and dying in 2023, she is known for work across alternative rock, Celtic, folk, folk rock, pop and pop rock, and for being associated with Hummingbird Records. She also appears with Band Aid 30.

Career

O'Connor rises to prominence in the late 1980s with her debut album The Lion and the Cobra. In 1990, she achieves international success with her version of Prince’s song “Nothing Compares 2 U”, which becomes a major worldwide hit and is named the number one world single of that year by the Billboard Music Awards. The song also earns three Grammy nominations.

Her recorded output includes ten studio albums, along with singles, songs for films, collaborations with other artists and appearances at charity fundraising concerts. She also gives a UK concert at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London in 2019, after a five-year absence from UK live performance.

Public profile

O'Connor is known for outspoken views on organised religion, women’s rights, war and child abuse, and for controversy linked to her public statements and gestures. She is ordained as a priest despite being a woman with a Roman Catholic background. In 2018, she converts to Islam and takes the name Shuhada Sadaqat, having previously used the name Magda Davitt.
