Selective Service
Selective Service are a Glasgow group active from 2009 to the present. Formed in January 2009, they spend their early years gigging across Scotland and building a following through a busy live schedule.
Style and influences
The band’s sound combines funk, reggae, blues and rock’n’roll, and they present themselves as a hard-to-categorise act. Their guitar-based, indie rock and rock identity sits alongside that broader mix of styles.
Early recording and releases
After a week of recording at La Chunky Studios in Glasgow, Selective Service begin releasing music in 2009 and 2010. Their recorded output includes several singles, among them Awkward Stage Thing Of The Past and Don't Talk Too Loud, which are available through Bandcamp. They also release a self-titled debut EP in 2010, followed by You Best Believe in 2011.
Live work and support slots
In their first 18 months, the band tour extensively around Scotland and support acts including Sons & Daughters, The Jim Jones Revue, The Heavy and The Hours. They also play a set at George Square during Winterfest in 2009. By 2010, they have played more than 100 gigs, and the launch for their debut EP draws a larger crowd than the venue can accommodate.
Further activity
The group continue recording and promoting new material after the release of their second EP, including shooting a second music video and arranging an instore performance at Pretty Green’s Glasgow boutique. Kasabian tour DJ Dan Martin is also booked for the launch night of that release.
