Rust

Rust is a Finnish metal group from Helsinki. It forms in 2001 and is active until 2011. The band line-up includes Mikko Herranen, Arto Kuronen and Jura Sarlin.

Style and release history

The group works in an alternative metal style, drawing on roots in 1990s alternative rock and metal while combining deep-tuned guitar riffs, prominent choruses and melodic, emotional vocals with a heavy sound. It also appears in genre listings for black metal, thrash metal, grindcore, heavy metal and Oi.

Rust releases its first official material as The Black EP. The song “Down” receives airplay on YleX as the station’s power play song of the week. In early 2004, the single “Miss You” appears in the film Addiction 3 and its soundtrack, while a cover of Duran Duran’s “Ordinary World” becomes the band’s first video single.

The debut album softly appears on TCM and is produced by Mikko Herranen with Meelis Niin. It reaches the Finnish album chart top 50 and is chosen as album of the week by YLEX. The second album, Songs of Suffocation, appears on 92Dawn and is also produced by Herranen. It shows a heavier and darker side of the band, and the single “Away” reaches number two on the Finnish Top 20 singles chart for two weeks. Rust also releases a free net EP titled SCARS.

Band changes

After SCARS, the band parts ways with long-time bassist Jura, and Rust continues as a four-member group with Herranen taking over bass duties. Herranen is described as the band’s singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, working on the albums with Meelis Niin.
