Puscifer

Puscifer is an American rock group formed in Los Angeles by Maynard James Keenan, who is also known as the lead singer of Tool and A Perfect Circle. At first, Keenan is the only permanent member and describes the project as his creative subconscious. Over time, frequent collaborators Mat Mitchell and Carina Round become permanent members.

Origins and name

The project first appears under the name Umlaut, described as a premiere improvisational hardcore band. The name Puscifer is first publicised as a fictional band in the opening episode of Mr. Show, with Keenan and Adam Jones listed as members. Jones is not otherwise part of Puscifer, although his artwork appears on Puscifer clothing, including the “Your Mom’s a Bitch” shirt.

Style and wider activity

Keenan describes Puscifer as a space for different voices and identities rather than a project with fixed goals. He also works on short films with Ford Englerth and Jeffrey Brooks of Red Rock Entertainment Development, in a style similar to Mr. Show and Tom Waits’ Big Time. Puscifer is also presented as a clothing line as well as a band, with limited-run items. Keenan collaborates with Paul Frank on a leather jacket.

Store and merchandise

The first Puscifer store opens in Jerome, Arizona, in a small space above a tattoo parlour. Alongside items sold through the band’s online store, the shop offers locally roasted coffee, art, and a changing range of limited-edition collectibles.

Puscifer’s studio albums are “V” Is for Vagina (2007), Conditions of My Parole (2011), Money Shot (2015), and Existential Reckoning (2020).
