Proud Mary
Proud Mary are a blues rock group from Royton, United Kingdom, formed in 2001 and active since then. The band is rooted in Manchester and takes its name from the Creedence Clearwater Revival song of the same title. Their line-up changes over time, but the core pairing of Paul Newsome and singer Greg Griffin remains central to the group.
Early releases and debut album
The band first appears with the single “Very Best Friend”, issued in a limited run of 500 copies on one-sided 7-inch vinyl, followed by another limited single, “All Good Things”. These releases lead into their debut album, The Same Old Blues, which is produced by Noel Gallagher, recorded in 10 days and released on his Sour Mash Records in 2001. The album draws on influences including Dylan, The Rolling Stones and The Faces, while also establishing the band’s own rock and roll sound.
Reception and later work
Proud Mary attract criticism in some parts of the press because of their connection with Noel Gallagher’s label, but they also receive recognition for the strength of the debut record. The band support Oasis, Neil Young, The Stereophonics, Paul Weller and Ocean Colour Scene, which helps bring them to a wider audience. By the time of Love and Light, the band’s sound is described as stronger, tighter and more experimental, with soul, blues and gospel alongside rock and roll. That record also reflects newer influences such as The Verve, The Beta Band and My Morning Jacket, and is released through Redemption Records.
