Porcupine Tree

Porcupine Tree are an English rock group from Hemel Hempstead, formed in 1987 and active since then. The band begins as a solo project by Steven Wilson before developing into a full group, with Wilson as the central figure throughout its history.

Formation and early work

Porcupine Tree start as a fictional concept influenced by 1970s psychedelic and progressive rock. Wilson creates early cassette releases including Tarquin’s Seaweed Farm and The Nostalgia Factory, which build an underground following. These recordings are later compiled on On the Sunday of Life... in 1992. The early sound draws on psychedelic rock, space rock and experimental music.

By the early 1990s, the project becomes a stable band with Richard Barbieri on keyboards, Colin Edwin on bass and Chris Maitland on drums. Up the Downstair in 1993 and The Sky Moves Sideways in 1995 extend the band’s reputation among progressive rock listeners, while live releases such as Spiral Circus and Coma Divine – Recorded Live in Rome document its touring activity.

Style and development

Signify in 1996 marks a move toward a more collaborative, band-based approach and a wider range of styles. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the group shifts toward more structured songwriting and alternative rock influences on Stupid Dream in 1999 and Lightbulb Sun in 2000.

After signing with a major label, Porcupine Tree move further toward progressive metal on In Absentia in 2002 and Deadwing in 2005. In 2002, Gavin Harrison replaces Chris Maitland on drums, and the line-up becomes one of the band’s best-known configurations.

Later albums and recognition

Fear of a Blank Planet in 2007 is a concept album focused on modern society and youth culture, and it receives awards attention including a Grammy nomination for Best Surround Sound Album. Nil Recurring appears as a companion EP in the same period. The Incident follows in 2009 and becomes the band’s most commercially successful release at that point.

After touring in support of The Incident, the band becomes inactive in 2010 as Wilson focuses on solo work and the other members pursue separate projects. It does not formally disband, and archival material and live recordings continue to appear, including Octane Twisted.

Reunion and recent activity

Porcupine Tree return in 2021 and release Closure/Continuation in 2022. That album is made by Wilson, Barbieri and Harrison, with Colin Edwin no longer involved. It develops over several years in relative secrecy, and the band tours internationally in 2022 and 2023 with additional live musicians. Closure/Continuation.Live follows in 2023.

The band’s wider profile combines critical recognition, a dedicated cult audience and influence on later artists, while remaining more associated with progressive and alternative music circles than the mainstream.
