Pink

Pink is a Belgian Dutch-language pop band associated with the 1990s. The group forms as a collaboration between Yutaka Fukuoka of Vibratones and Hoppy Kamiyama of Hero, later joined by Hajime Okano, who also plays in Kamiyama’s rock group Gun Blast. Atsunobu Yakabe, Osamu Sakasai and percussionist and former model Steve Eto complete the line-up.

Early releases and albums

The band releases the singles 砂の雫 (Drops of Sand) and プライベートストーリー (Private Story) in 1984. It self-produces its first album, PINK, and issues it on its own MOON Records label. The group follows with 光の子 (Child of Light) in 1986, then releases PSYCHO-DELICIOUS and CYBER in 1987. Its recordings also include the English-language single 英語版 (Soul Flight), produced under RIME.

Later releases and activity

As the band’s profile grows, major labels become involved. Hoppy Kamiyama signs a two-album deal with Toshiba EMI, while PSYCHO-DELICIOUS is produced by the British label RIME and Daydream Tracks is produced by Sony Epic in 1987. The group returns to independent production for Final Mix in 1988. In 1989, Osamu Sakasai takes over guitar duties for Red & Blue.

Members continue to work on solo projects while involved with Pink. Steve Eto leaves in 1988, and the band’s new output comes to an end. Later, a greatest hits compilation, The Best of Pink, appears in 2002. The group continues to tour with changing combinations of original members and support musicians.

Other projects

Hoppy Kamiyama later founds the labels God Mountain and God Ocean. Former members also go on to work with groups including Halo, Quadraphonics, Rael, Flesh, Pugs, ONTJ and Madame Piranha.

Name note

The name Pink also refers to other acts, including a late 1980s Japanese new wave band and the alias of computer game music composer and demoscene artist Manfred Linzner, who co-creates the AHX tracker format.
