Philip Jeays

Philip Jeays is a British singer-songwriter, born in 1962 and raised in the south of England. He begins performing in the 1980s and releases his first album, October, in 1999.

Style and influences

Jeays is associated with the chanson tradition in England, alongside artists such as Des de Moor, Barb Jungr and Robb Johnson. His songs often use barbed wit and are delivered in a dramatic, intense style. He acknowledges the influence of Jacques Brel and Jake Thackray, and he is also compared with early David Bowie.

Recordings

He releases six albums: October (1999), Cupid Is A Drunkard (2000), The Ballad of Ruben Garcia (2002), Fame (2003), Mr Jeays (2005) and London (2009).

Live work

Jeays is best known for his live performances. He sometimes appears solo, sometimes with a band featuring David Harrod on piano, and from 2006 he also performs with the Fabulous Stapleton Sisters as his backing band.
