Phideaux

Phideaux is a Los Angeles-based group led by Xavier Phideaux, a composer who grows up in New York City and describes his music as “psychedelic progressive gothic rock”. The project centres on adventurous art rock and crossover prog, with a sound that draws on classic rock while remaining modern and distinctive.

Line-up and approach

The band comprises many friends who have known each other since early childhood. Its recordings are released independently, and each album takes a different approach in sound and subject matter. The music is described as keyboard-heavy, with an emphasis on mellotrons and flutes, as well as dual lead guitar and power chords. It also uses syncopation and tricky time signatures, while keeping a strong focus on melody and memorable riffs.

Lyrics and recordings

The lyrics often tell stories, sometimes in direct terms and sometimes more obliquely, with the aim of creating images or metaphors. Phideaux’s discography includes Friction, Fiendish, Ghost Story, Chupacabras, 313, The Great Leap, Doomsday Afternoon, Number Seven, Snowtorch, and Infernal.
