Paul Johnson

Paul Johnson is a Chicago house music DJ and producer from Chicago, United States. Born in 1971 and dying in 2021, he is associated with the Chicago house and dance scenes and is listed as a member of Brother 2 Brother, 2 Men on Wax, Traxmen, Club Style and Pjay.

Career

Johnson grows out of Chicago’s house music tradition and releases a large body of work, including more than 130 EPs. He issues 12-inch records on labels such as Cajual, Relief and Dance Mania, before later connecting with Peacefrog. His work also appears on Dancemania, Nite Life, Undaground Therapy, Defected, DJax Up Beats, Moody and Dust Traxx, with Nicepeople also listed among his labels.

His debut album, Bump Talkin', appears in 1994, followed by Feel The Music, which becomes one of his most discussed releases. He later produces the house anthem Get Get Down, which sells more than 3 million copies worldwide, is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, and appears on more than 100 CD and house compilations. He also releases singles including She Got Me On and I Wanna Play With You, both of which reach the Billboard top 50 and above.

DJ work and remixes

Johnson is also known as a DJ from Chicago and is described as one of the city’s strongest dancefloor DJs. His remix credits include Destiny’s Child, Jon B, Ce Ce Peniston, Daft Punk, Myron, Mr K-Alexi, Stacy Kidd, Joey Beltram, Green Velvet, Armando, Ron Trent and Steve Poindexter, among others.

Collaborations

His solo work is noted as being as widely valued as his collaborative productions, including work with Gant Garrard. The text also places him among artists who help define underground house music through releases on consistently underground dance labels.
