Nova Twins

Nova Twins are a London-based duo formed in 2014 by Amy Love and Georgia South. The group consists of Love on vocals and guitar and South on bass and backing vocals. Their sound draws on alternative rock, hip hop, metal, nu metal, pop rock and punk, and they are also associated with nu metal, punk, alternative rock, rap rock and punk rock.

Background and formation

Love and South are childhood friends and had played in bands that often appeared on the same bills before forming a project together. Both have mixed heritage: Love is of Iranian and Nigerian descent, while South is of Jamaican and Australian descent. South’s father, William South, is also a musician.

The pair first perform as BRAATS in 2014 and release the song “Bad Bitches” under that name. Later in 2014 they settle on the name Nova Twins and issue their first song under that name, “Bassline Bitch”, in 2015.

Releases and labels

“Bassline Bitch” attracts the attention of independent label Robotunes, which signs the duo and releases their self-titled EP in 2016. In 2017 they self-release the singles “Thelma & Louise” and “Mood Swings” and start a custom clothing line called Bad Stitches. They follow with the self-released singles “Hit Girl” and “Lose Your Head” in 2018.

At the end of 2018 they begin recording their debut album with producer Jim Abbiss. The singles “Devil’s Face” and “Vortex” are released from the album, along with music videos. The duo later signs to Fever 333’s label 333 Wreckords Crew.

Albums and recognition

Their debut album, Who Are the Girls?, is released in 2020 and receives positive reviews from outlets including Kerrang! and Crash. The band wins Best U.K. Breakthrough Band at the 2020 Heavy Music Awards.

The second album, Supernova, is released in 2022 and is shortlisted for the Mercury Prize.

Touring and collaborations

Nova Twins tour widely across several countries and support Prophets of Rage, Wolf Alice, Little Simz, Dream Wife, Black Honey and Skunk Anansie. After a show at the French festival Rencontres Trans Musicales in 2016, they continue touring through Europe and America and appear at Afropunk in Brooklyn. Tom Morello describes them as “the best band you’ve never heard of” after they support Prophets of Rage.

The duo also works with brands, including a global Dr Martens campaign that combines music and visuals.

Style

The group’s music is built around South’s bass work and effects pedals and Love’s vocals and guitar. Their lyrics and performances are often presented with a strong emphasis on attitude and self-styled fashion, including custom-made clothes and high heels.
