No Te Va Gustar
No Te Va Gustar, also known as NTVG, is a rock group from Montevideo, Uruguay. It forms in 1994 and is associated with rock uruguayo, ska and Latin-influenced styles, with its repertoire also taking in reggae, candombe, salsa and murga.
Formation and early years
The group begins as a trio made up of Emiliano Brancciari on guitar, Mateo Moreno on bass and Pablo Abdala on drums. It forms when its members are still teenagers. In 1997 the line-up expands and the band adds further Latin American and Caribbean rhythms to its sound. Recognition starts to build in 1998 after the group wins the Third Song Festival of Montevideo and another competition organised by the Montevideo City Council Youth Commission.
Recordings and activity
In 1999 the band tours venues in Montevideo and begins recording its first album, Sólo de noche, which is finished independently in December and released in 2000. During the summer of 2000 the group tours the east coast of Uruguay, including Punta del Diablo, Valizas, Cabo Polonio, La Pedrera, La Paloma, Atlántida, El Pinar and Solymar.
Its second album, Éste fuerte viento que sopla, is recorded in Santiago, Chile in 2002 and sells gold within six months of release. From this point, the band becomes one of the key names in Uruguayan rock and maintains a busy live schedule. In 2004 it tours the Atlantic coast and shares bills with groups including La Zurda and Bersuit Vergarabat, while also playing increasingly often in Argentina, where it builds an audience in cities such as La Plata, Morón, Ramos Mejía and Lomas de Zamora.
The third album, Aunque cueste ver el sol, appears in 2005. The release concert draws a crowd of 10,000 and is later issued on DVD. That year the band also tours Europe, performing in more than 40 cities including Munich, Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin, Vienna, Bern and Madrid. In 2006 it records Todo es tan inflamable and promotes the album with concerts in Uruguay and Argentina.
Line-up
The band’s line-up includes Emiliano Brancciari on vocals and guitar, Guzmán Silveira on bass and backing vocals, Gonzalo Castex on percussion, Martín Gil on trumpet and backing vocals, Denis Ramos on trombone, Marcel Curuchet on keyboards and Pablo Coniberti on guitar. Other members listed are Diego Bartaburu on drums and Mauricio Ortiz on tenor saxophone, alongside Mateo Moreno and Pablo Abdala from the original trio.
