Neal Morse

Neal Morse is an American singer, musician and composer from Van Nuys, in the United States, born in 1960 and based in Nashville, Tennessee. He is known for progressive rock and for music that also draws on Christian rock, contemporary Christian music, heavy metal, experimental rock, instrumental rock and Christmas music.

Early life and musical beginnings

Morse grows up in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles as one of four children. His father is a choral director. He starts piano at the age of five and guitar at nine. In his twenties he writes two musicals, Hit Man and Homeland, works as a session musician, and records country and western demos with his brother Richard.

Spock’s Beard and early prog work

In 1992, Morse forms the progressive rock band Spock’s Beard with his brother Alan. The band’s debut album, The Light, appears in 1995 and receives positive critical attention, helping establish the group in progressive rock. During this period, Morse also faces financial difficulties and spends periods performing as a one-man band in pubs in Germany. Alongside Spock’s Beard, he tours with Eric Burdon’s band.

Supergroups and collaborations

In 1999, Morse joins Mike Portnoy, Roine Stolt and Pete Trewavas to form Transatlantic. The band releases SMPT:e, Bridge Across Forever, The Whirlwind, Kaleidoscope and The Absolute Universe, as well as several live recordings. Touring guest musicians include Daniel Gildenlöw and Ted Leonard.

After leaving Spock’s Beard in 2002, Morse begins a solo career focused on Christian-themed progressive rock and releases many concept albums centred on faith and spirituality. In 2003, he forms Yellow Matter Custard with Portnoy, Paul Gilbert and Matt Bissonette; the group is a Beatles tribute act named from a lyric in “I Am the Walrus”.

In 2012, Morse co-founds Flying Colors with Portnoy, Dave LaRue, Casey McPherson and Steve Morse, and the group releases a self-titled debut album. In 2014, he forms the Neal Morse Band with Portnoy, Randy George, Eric Gillette and Bill Hubauer. The band’s albums include The Grand Experiment, The Similitude of a Dream, The Great Adventure and Innocence & Danger.

Later projects

Morse also appears in or works with several other groups, including Spock’s Beard, Eric Burdon’s I Band, The Prog World Orchestra, Burlesque, Casanova, D’Virgilio, Morse & Jennings, and Morse Portnoy George. He is associated with Radiant Records and Big Hatter Music Co.

In 2024, he introduces Neal Morse & The Resonance, a progressive rock project featuring musicians from Tennessee, and the group releases No Hill for a Climber. In 2025, he announces Cosmic Cathedral with Chester Thompson, Phil Keaggy and Byron House, and the project releases its first album. Morse is also part of The Prog World Orchestra, Yellow Matter Custard and Transatlantic, and he works with The Neal Morse Band and Flying Colors as part of his wider career in progressive rock.
