Matthew Mole is a South African singer-songwriter from Cape Town. He is known as a multi-instrumentalist whose music combines folk songwriting with layered production and electronic elements. He describes his work as folk music with an electronic backbone, with an emphasis on guitar rhythms, vocal harmonies and percussion.
Career
Matthew Mole begins recording as an independent artist with the EP You Did Well, Kid in 2011. He wins the Converse Get Out Of The Garage contest in 2012 and then signs to Just Music. After that, he releases the EP Same Parts, Same Heart.
In 2013, he releases The House We Built on Just Music. The album reaches No. 1 on iTunes in July and is described as the first time a native South African reaches that position. It produces the singles Take Yours, I’ll Take Mine, You & Your Crown and Autumn.
A deluxe edition of The Home We Built follows in 2014, and he releases the live album iTunes Sessions in 2015.
Style and influences
His music draws on folk, indie and acoustic ideas, with a sound rooted in nu-folk and supported by layered production. He cites influences ranging from Mumford & Sons to Gold Panda, and presents music as a way of communicating ideas and beliefs.
