Mampi Swift is the performance name of Phil Anim, a United Kingdom drum and bass and jungle artist who was previously known as Swift. He is also associated with production music. His stage name includes “Mampi”, a word meaning “big, strong and quick”, and he is known for DJing with double drops.

Career

Swift begins his career as a DJ in the early 1990s. He later works at the now closed Lucky Spin record shop, where he has access to the studio next door and learns from in-house engineer Pete Parsons, also known as Voyager. After releasing records on several established labels, he sets up his own imprint, Charge Recordings.

Production and labels

He produces under the Mampi Swift name largely on his own and develops a style he describes as “plain rolling”, built around simple, catchy rhythms and distorted basslines. He has releases on Charge Recordings and also works with Blade Recordings. The verified label information identifies Charge Recordings as one of his labels. He also works with Blame and 720 Degrees Music.

Style and performance

Swift’s DJ sets use dubplates and vinyl, and he does not use CDs when performing. His approach is presented as a way of supporting record culture. He is also described as careful about not overexposing new tracks, with pre-release promo copies used instead of wider issue.

Collaborations and releases

He works heavily with Blame, and the Charge release “Stay Forever” by Blame is noted as a current label title in his circle of activity. He has produced all current releases on Charge and three releases on Blade Recordings. His older material continues to receive play internationally.

Ongoing activity

Swift remains active as a producer and label owner, with work centred on Charge Recordings and the development of new artists for the label.
